Marcus Alexander Slayton was born in New Caprica on Rhodes Coloney to Captain Andrew Slayton, commanding officer of the USS Sulu, and his wife, Morgana, the ship's counselor. The eldest of five children, Marcus was expected to join Starfleet like the rest of the family had before him, a tradition which went all the way back to his ancestor Marcus (who he is named for) who served on the NX-02 Columbia as its armory officer. Marcus at first didn't want to accept this but after he spent two months aboard the Sulu, feeling the hum of the ship's warp core - he was hooked.

Despite one "incident" during his years as a cadet, Marcus graduated with a commandant's letter in engineering when during an updated version of the infamous "Kobayashi Maru" scenario, he managed to use some quick thinking in order to keep his "ship" going during the hostile encounter with the "Romulans" as well as a training mission aboard the USS Hathaway. Marcus' first post was aboard the USS Hiroshima, one of the new Achilles-class Attack Cruisers for his first tour of duty, but war between the Federation and the Dominion broke out shortly there after.

After graduating from Officer's Candidate School, Marcus was posted aboard the USS Leonard H. McCoy as an engineering officer. After two years of serving under the command of two of his father's friends, Marcus requested a change of duty and found himself aboard the USS Galaxy as part of her engineering staff.

Marcus is viewed by many as a very open-minded and expressive person and very good to work with but the moment that anyone tries to go into details about the war or tell war-stories, Marcus becomes very brooding and tends to ignore everyone until there is a change in subject.

It is widely known that Marcus is a very opinioned but thoughtful person with a more than normal understanding of ancient earth naval traditions along with those of modern day Starfleet. He also feels "closed in" due to the shadow that his family projects due to their long and famed history as apart of Starfleet.

Marcus tends to wear normal wire-framed glasses while on and off duty, due to a slight near-sightedness that was brought on by an injury in combat during the last days of the war. Due to an allergy to Rentix-5, he has to wear glasses.
