Orin Kara'nin is a geologist specializing in ice and ice formation, currently based at the K'ederata University in Talakla, Fruna. In 2354, he and Zalan Unadan, who at the time was a public relations officer for Emit'an Industries, conceived a child, Cutter Kara'nin.

Cutter is not a Kardian name. He was named after a type of Terran naval craft, which is the favored sea vessel of a friend Orin's, Oreias Carneiro. However, it is close to a more common Kardian name, Kutar.

Cutter was raised by his father, Orin, in Talakla. Because his father was a professor, he spent quite a bit of time around academia. He also developed an interest in music, taking up the Kardian instrument, the donala, though this interest never became more than a hobby.

In 2365, Cutter accompanied his father, Oreias Carneiro and two more of his father's colleagues on a scientific expedition studying cryovolcanism in a nearby stellar system. This was Cutter's first extra-system travel.

At the age of 11, Cutter left his father's care for primary schooling. He was accepted to math and science magnet school on Kenara, the second M-class planet in the Frunan system. From there, he moved on to Melara University , where he majored in Astronomy and Physics.

During his tenure at Melara, Cutter developed a friendship with Zan Lanaka, an archeologist, and Arkedi Nitelrajek, a linguist. The three of them are connected in three criminal incidents. The first is an account of breaking and entering, into the Melara observatory, housing the 80 cm optical telescope. The second is an account of vandalism, cited as destruction of terrain in a national park. Three years after this incident, Zan Lanaka gained legal permission to excavate remains of a tomb buried beneath the park. The third incident is an arrest for public brawling on Sorangi, a planet outside of the Fruna'lin sphere of influence. Also involved in this incident was Saul Bental.

Cutter was accepted into Starfleet Academy in 2372, where he furthered his research in astronomy and cosmology. In 2377, he was assigned to the USS Galaxy under command of R.E.L Price.

During his station there, Hirogen marauders attacked the Galaxy and transported a large number of the crew to an alien planet to serve as prey to the Hirogen hunters. Cutter was among these crewmen. During this incident, he was attacked and his left wing was severely injured. Ultimately, the Hirogen were defeated and Cutter was able to receive medical treatment before his condition became serious.

When the Galaxy returned to dry-dock for extensive refits, Cutter returned to Melara University as an associate professor of Physics. By this time, Arkedi Nitelrajek had obtained a professorship of linguistics at the same institution.

In 2379, when the Galaxy was relaunched, Cutter returned as Chief Science Officer. Shortly after launch, the Galaxy encountered the USS Defiant, thought lost in 2268. The ship had become inhabited by an extra-dimensional intelligence. When the Galaxy's crew interacted with this intelligence, they were faced with nightmarish imagery and put through severe psychological trauma.

Shortly after this incident, the Galaxy was visited by known rogue, Harvey Mudd, who brought aboard a number of androids that seduced the crew using pheromones. Cutter was noted to have locked himself in his quarters for the duration of the incident with a single android.

During the mission to the Gryphon asteroid mining colony, Cutter and Arkedi and Zan, who had joined him on the Galaxy, were trapped in the main colony when it was opened to space.

Following that incident, and during the Battle of Havras, Cutter, along with three other Galaxy crewmen, Corran Rex, Ella Grey and Curtis Geluf, were stranded on a desert planet for several weeks. While stranded on this planet, the four of them were forced to subsist on the fluids found inside a native cactus-like plant. This fluid seemed to have remarkable effects on at least three of the crewmen. For Corran, it seemed to cure his T'Rex's Syndrome. For Curtis, the fluids made him hypersensitive to sensory information, which ultimately drove him temporarily insane. For Cutter, the fluids had the unusual and interesting effect of allowing him to see approximately two seconds into the future of his own timeline, though such visions were not controlled.

Once rescued from the planet, these precognitive abilities faded, and although fluids from these cacti were obtained and studied, their affects could not be replicated off planet. Nor were there any apparent fields or other planetary factors that could explain this ability.

Arkedi and Zan, during their stay aboard the Galaxy, were trying to conceive a child. However, when Cutter returned from the desert planet, he and Zan initiated a mating relationship that quickly resulted in her pregnancy. The decision was made to not inform Arkedi, who was under the impression the child was his.

Almost immediately following the discovery of Zan's pregnancy, in 2381, a grant proposal, written jointly by Cutter and Dr. Rudra Brahman and a handful of other scientists, was granted by the Federation Science Council. Cutter left the Galaxy to serve as assistant director to the first science station specializing in the study of singularity physics and to lead a research project that would pierce the event horizon and peer inside a black hole.

In 2383, a psychologist, Dr. Virgil Maro, was sent to this station, Singularity Station Alpha, to judge the psychological health of its crew, who had, for the last year, been living on the surface of a black hole. Cutter's experiment, the piercing of the event horizon, was scheduled to take place during this visit. As the sensor arm was being lowered into the singularity, Dr. Rudra Brahman suffered a massive stroke and died. Maro attempted to stop the experiment, but was prevented. However, his actions are thought to have initiated the expansion of a dimensional field trapped within the singularity, which may have created a possible big bang scenario resulting in the destruction of this physical universe and the formation of a new one. Maro, who had fallen to a level of insanity, thought this was a sign of God and fought to left the field continue to expand. In the resulting struggle, Maro was killed and Cutter initiated a collapse of the field, and was irradiated by matter and energy from within the singularity. Much of this radiation is new to modern science, but a significant portion of it, as detected by the sensors of the nearby USS Galaxy, consisted of chronoton particles, which are the particles that transfer temporal energy.

Examinations following the incident show no obvious effects to Cutter's mental or physical health, but it remains unclear what the consequences of this irradiation are, if any.

Currently, Cutter has been reposted to the USS Galaxy as a science officer.

 

Cutter is extremely intelligent. His name is well known and highly respected within the scientific community, especially in relation to cosmology and multidimensional physics.

This has perhaps caused him to be extremely arrogant and overly confident in his abilities. He frequently places himself above others in intelligence and related abilities and then uses this placement as justification for special treatment or to get what he wants.

In truth, his contributions to the field are highly valued by the Federation science community, and Starfleet Science feels that it is important to allow Cutter relatively free reign in his assignments and resource access, as long as he continues to produce new and important research.

As a result of this external pressure, Cutter has become a workaholic and incredibly intolerant of distractions.

Contrary to desired intentions, Cutter has developed a hatred of alien cultures, specifically humans, during his tenure in Starfleet. He will often refer to humans and other humanoids as ground-walkers and consider them to be generally inferior to him and his native species and their culture. Though this has resulted in a number of verbal confrontations, there have been no physical actions taken as a result of this prejudice.

Serving among humanoids, and perhaps, often being confined to small spaces as a result of serving aboard starships, something which is thought to be psychologically detrimental to members of his species, has made Cutter easily irritable and difficult to interact with.

 

Hobbies: Physics (Quantum Dynamics and Gravitation and their interface, especially in extreme environments, Multidimensional theory, Warp physics, Dynamics), Astronomy (Cosmology, Star and Planet formation and evolution and system dynamics), Planetary and Stellar System Geology, Archeology, Music (proficiency with the Donala, a marimba-like instrument).

In 2381, Cutter was marooned on a desert planet. For reasons unknown, but possibly due to ingesting fluids from foreign flora or natural planetary fields, Cutter developed the precognitive ability to see approximately two seconds into his future.

When asked about this curious ability, Cutter describes it as 'incredibly annoying.'

In 2383, Cutter was irradiated with energy from within a black hole. Much of components of this radiation is unknown to modern science, but consisted of, at least partially, chronoton radiation. It remains to be seen if this radiation has manifested any lasting effects.

Dark blue hair and eyes, thin, tone. Large wings extending from the back, arching, when closed, about a foot above the head and reaching down to the ankle, a 4.5 meter wing span. The wings are white with dark blue tips.

Fruna’lin History and Culture Highlights
The Fruna’lin civilization covers four star systems. The original system, the Fruna system, lies about 200 light years from Earth towards the galactic core. The Fruna system contains seven planets, three terrestrial and four gas giants, each with several moons. All major terrestrial bodies are inhabited as are many asteroids in the two belts. The Fruna system contains two M-Class planets, Fruna and Kenara. While both planets developed vegetation, Fruna was the only planet to develop animal life.

Mlintire, the second closest star system at 2.7 light years away, has two terrestrial planets and two gas giants, again with all major terrestrial bodies inhabited. The only M-Class planet, Mlintire, contains no intelligent life of its own, although recent excavations may provide evidence of a civilization that went extinct several million years ago. Niptol, a dwarf star 3.5 light years away from Fruna, is the third major star system. Niptol contains only four small terrestrial planets, of which the most inhabitable is similar to Mars. The last Fruna’lin inhabited star system, Kaya, a binary star system 13 light years away from Fruna has only been settled recently, about 60 years ago, after first contact with the Federation.

People
The Fruna’lin are avian creatures with wings capable of flight. A brief description of their anatomy follows these highlights. The Fruna’lin have developed a vast variety of different cultures and languages over their 18,000 years of civilization. Fruna’lin standard is the language used for trade and government; however there are 17 major language groups, and several hundred individual languages, each with several hundred more dialects. 98% of all Fruna’lin have no religion, although many different rituals and holidays that originated from various religions are still widely practiced.

Demography
Over half the population lives within the Fruna system, 66% of which live on either Fruna or Kenara, or about 40% of the total population. The second largest settlement is Mlintire, which holds about 14% of the total population. Today, approximately 43 billion Fruna’lin exist.

Family
Marriage does not exist in any Fruna’lin culture. Although some may chose to stay with one mate for life, most never stay with one mate for very long. Both parents consent to children before conception. The child is raised by only one parent until it reaches adulthood, at age 11, and leaves for secondary education. Because of Fruna’lin mating habits, many Fruna’lin have very large families of half siblings; very few have true siblings. Family ties are nonexistent at the least, very weak at the most.

Education and Health
Primary schooling is taught very loosely for the first 11 years of life. Because Fruna’lin change residence so often, stationary schools are impractical, therefore most education is taught from parent to child. At age 11, Fruna’lin young leave their parents and attend secondary school. Secondary school generally lasts for two years. Higher learning beyond that is also free, but not compulsory. Several thousand institutions of higher learning exist, and thorough education is encouraged. Health care is usually free to all who require it.

Arts
Artistic creation is highly encouraged by most Fruna’lin cultures. The Fruna’lin have created amazing works in painting, poetry, fiction, drama, opera, film, storytelling, song and dance. Unique to the Fruna’lin is the art of sky dancing.

Economic Activity
Fruna’lin economy is widely varied. Each settlement generally has its own few specializations, whether manufacturing and services, agriculture or mining. Fruna has the most varied economy, being the origin planet for Fruna’lin civilization. Its largest moon, Frunukhun, specializes in agriculture. It exports vast amounts of fruit and grain grown in greenhouses that stretch for miles across its surface. Kenara has the highest tourism industry of all the settlements. Its population nearly triples for a month for the largest festival held in the Federation, Ra’kamil’kenara, the Birth of Beauty.

The Fruna’lin are also experts in high powered laser technology and solar sailing, as well as construction and enclosed biosystems. Fruna and Kenara boast some of the tallest buildings in the Federation, reaching up to 3.5 kilometers tall.

Government
Most settlements are democratic republican. Many are split into several tiers, Fruna, for example, has 15 levels of government, starting with city or town councils and ending with the planet wide senates. The asteroid settlements, on the other hand, usually have a corporate structured government.
A delicate balance between communal, socialist and capitalist economic structures exists on the largest settlements. Smaller settlements, such as those on moons, tend to have a more communal economic system.

History
Fruna’lin civilization is 18,000 years old and began on Fruna. Around 1,200 years ago, the Fruna’lin entered space in chemically propelled space craft. The first extraterrestrial settlement on Kenara began 1163 AD (Terran years). By about 1500 AD, every major terrestrial body in the Fruna system had been settled. By this time, the Fruna’lin had developed space sailing technology, which would allow them to reach the next closest star, Mlintire within 30 years. A planet thriving with its own life was discovered and a settlement was started there in 1787 AD. The second closest star system, Niptol, was colonized in 1862. The last major colonization took place in 2322 at Kaya, the third closest star system.

In 2297, the Federation of Planets initiated first contact with an interstellar sailing vessel, marking the first contact with intelligent extraterrestrial life for the Fruna’lin. Despite the fact that the Fruna’lin had never developed faster than light engines, the Federation felt first contact was justified because of the high technology possessed by the Fruna’lin and the lack of major violent conflict in over 900 years. Warp drive was slowly introduced over the next 25 years. The Fruna’lin inhabited star systems entered the Federation together in 2361.

Fruna'lin Anatomy
The Fruna'lin are a humanoid race from the planet Fruna. Their major characteristics include a third set of appendages that extend from the posterior torso. These appendages act as wings and allow for flight. The Fruna'lin have a modified generic skeletal system to support their wings. This modified system includes two large plate bones in the back that the wing muscles attach to, as well as hollow bones.

Fruna'lin are a largely mammalian species. They give birth to their young and care for them with mammary glands. Fruna'lin also have a self-regulated body temperature. Unlike Mammillae and more like Avians, Fruna'lin have feathers, which are most noticeable on the wings.

Fruna'lin also have a very symmetrical hand. They have two opposable thumbs on either side of the hand and four fingers. There are no opposable digits on the foot, although Fruna'lin have two larger toes on either side of the foot that would correspond with the thumbs on the hand.

With the exception of wings, Fruna'lin appear human. The only other difference in appearance comes in colors. Fruna'lin can exhibit a variety of colors in their feathers, anywhere from white to yellow or red to blue or green. Historically, feather color caused social problems like skin color did on Earth.

Wings
Fruna'lin wings are considered a third set of appendages. They extend out of the back, just below the scapulae (shoulder blades). Fruna'lin have an additional set of plate bones under the scapulae. The scapulae themselves are reduced in size to make room for the new bones.

The shaf'klarik'cho (wing plates) extend from the spine to side of the body. They provide an anchor for the wing muscles, especially the large powerful muscles used on the down stroke. They also provide a socket for the ball joint of the wing. There are twenty bones in each wing, excluding the shaf'klarik'cho: one anchor that connects to the wing plate, three in the upper wing and sixteen in the lower wing. The total wingspan of a Fruna'lin is about four times their height.

The anchor bone, the shaf'tgh, connects to the wing plate in a ball-socket joint. It also connects to the first real wing bone, the jak'shaf, in a hinge joint. This bone is fairly rigidly attached to the last two bones in the upper wing, simply called jak'chaj'le, ancient Fruna'lin for upper wing pair. This pair of bones functions similar to the ulna and radius in the human arm, they allow for that part of the wing to twist.

They connect to the first in a series of seven bones in the lower wing. The seven kaj'shaf'cho bones are all connect to one another using a small round bone, chaj'oyo. These joints give the lower wing semi-rigidity, but also allow it limited ability to curve and twist.

At the tip of the wing, there are two bones that mimic the jak'chaj'le in the upper wing and a small digit that anchors the feathers on the tip of the wing. They are called the kaj'chaj'le and the shaf'swuz. These wing bones, along with most of the other major bones are hollow.

The muscles that control the wings, especially the down stroke are enormously developed, giving Fruna'lin a wider than average chest. Most other muscles are generally not as developed, and are less dense than human muscle. Thus, the average weight of a Fruna'lin is far less than that of a human. Generally, Fruna'lin weigh from 80 to 110 pounds. The flying ability of overweight Fruna'lin suffers.

Feathers
Feathers provide flexible but strong structures for powered flight. Typical feathers are called contour feathers; they consist of a base, a central tapering shaft and a paired series of thin barbs on either side of the shaft that forms the vane. There are other feathers, filoplumes, which act as hair and downs for insulation. These filoplumes cover the head and make eyebrows. Their 'hair' covers their head as normal, but also extends down the neck and back and reaches the base of their wings. As the feathers reach the wings, the filoplumes are replaced with small secondary feathers. This feather covering is speculated to cover most of the body in earlier evolutions, which would have aided in flight by reducing air friction. Their filoplume hair does not extend down to the face. Auricular feathers sit in front of the ear and serve to block wing from entering the ear canal during flight. Lying in the skin of the wing is a unique oil gland, which aids in feather maintenance and waterproofing.

Aerobic Systems
Fruna'lin also have an overly developed respiratory system. Their lung capacity is almost twice that of humans. The respiratory system is also unidirectional. Unlike most other humanoids who breathe air into their lungs and then back out, a bi-directional system, the Fruna’lin breathe air into the lungs, which then moves into from the lungs to air sacs, and then back out through the mouth or nostrils. This in one way, out another method of breathing prevents used air from mixing with new air, ensuring the air breathed in is always fully oxygenated. The heart is also proportionately larger, and its beat varies between 120 to 150 beats per minute during flight. The Fruna’lin have a much higher metabolism than most humanoids, and so must eat quite a bit to maintain their energy. A higher body temperature also assists in metabolizing food. Extra sleep is not needed to replenish energy used in flight. In fact, most flight requires very little energy. Given a sufficient amount of wind, such as that found over water, Fruna’lin can fly for several hours with out needing to rest.

Sensory Organs
The Fruna'lin have very well developed vision. Their eyes have exceptionally acute resolution and are binocular. Color perception is excellent. Fruna'lin can detect the entire visible spectrum and can sense a little into the ultraviolet and infrared spectrums. Both eyes each have three lids, an upper and lower lid, like most other species. The Fruna’lin also have a nictitating membrane underneath these outer eyelids. This membrane is a thin, moist, translucent fold of skin that sweeps across the eye sideways, beginning near the nose. This third eyelid helps to moisten and clean the eye and protects it from strong wind and bright light. Hearing is acute, but the senses of smell and taste are poorly developed.

The Fruna'lin also have the unique ability to detect magnetic fields. This sense, common to many species native to Fruna, aided earlier evolutions of the race in their migratory patterns. Two linear regions of large iron deposits located just above the ear on either side of the head serve as internal compasses.
Instead of a single set of vocal cords in a voice box situated near the top of the windpipe, the Fruna’lin have two near the bottom of the windpipe, where it splits into each lung. In this configuration, each set of vocal cords has their own air source and can be controlled so that each makes its own sound. This allows for much more complicated sounds than most other humanoids. Birdsong is still a popular mating ritual among lesser species on Fruna, and vocal music is a very diverse art form among the Fruna’lin.

Coloration
Fruna'lin have melanin in their skin, but they also have other pigments: pterins and guanins. These two pigments are predominant in their feathers, but can appear in small quantities in the skin. Pterins provide for shades between red and yellow and guanins provide colors between green and blue. Usually just one pigment is dominant and individual coloration depends on family heritage. For example, Fruna'lin from the Falkon continents generally display white or green to blue feather coloration and Fruna'lin from the Kardi'naln continent generally display yellow to red feather coloration. The feathers are generally not one color and can often fade into other colors. A very common coloration is light blue hair to white wings. Also, it is not uncommon for Fruna'lin with very dark colored feathers, such as dark blue or dark green, to exhibit these colors in their skin as well, although the skin coloration is very faint.

The Hand
Fruna'lin have in total twelve fingers, six on each hand. There are two thumbs per hand, one on each side, and four fingers. Motor control of the hand is very sophisticated. This sophistication, along with their upright stature, allowed prehistoric Fruna'lin to hold tools and to develop civilization. Many other species also have opposable digits on the hand. This development gives an advantage in climbing and perching. However, other species lack the fine motor control and so are unable to adequately grip small objects. They also use all four limbs to walk, unlike the bipedal Fruna'lin.
